Maglić Summit — 2,386 m

Bosnia and Herzegovina's highest peak — a full-day alpine ascent with three secured rope sections and a descent to Trnovačko Lake

Full day Max 25 people Prior hiking experience desirable Sutjeska NP · Tjentište Min age 15
Your adventure snapshot

The highest point in Bosnia. All in one day.

Maglić stands at 2,386 m on the border between Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro — the highest peak in the country and one of the most dramatic summits in the western Balkans. The ascent from Prijevor plateau takes you through juniper thickets, across scree fields and up a final ridge with three sections of fixed alpine rope before the summit cairn.

From the top: a panorama across both countries, the Tara Canyon visible to one side, the Perućica forest below on the other. Then the descent leads down toward Trnovačko Lake — the heart-shaped glacial lake at 1,517 m — for lunch on the shore before the return to Tjentište.

This is the most demanding single-day tour we offer. Previous alpine climbing experience is not required, but prior hiking experience is strongly recommended. The ascent involves sharp elevation gain, loose scree and three fixed rope sections on the final ridge. Minimum age is 15. Bring proper boots — this is not a trail hike.

The summit, the ridge and the lake below

The highest point in Bosnia — 2,386 m

Maglić is the apex of Bosnia & Herzegovina, sitting on the border ridge with Montenegro. The summit view covers both countries — the Tara Canyon to the west, the Pivska plateau to the east, and on a clear day the Adriatic haze to the south. There's nothing higher in the country to block the view.

Three fixed alpine rope sections

The final ridge to the summit involves three sections of fixed alpine rope — hands and feet on real rock, exposure on both sides. The ropes are professionally maintained and your guide leads each section. No climbing experience needed, but this is what makes Maglić different from a trail hike.

Descent to Trnovačko Lake

The return route leads down from the summit ridge toward the heart-shaped Trnovačko Lake at 1,517 m. Lunch at the lakeshore — a sharp contrast to the rock and scree above: clear water, the surface reflecting the peaks you just climbed.

The most dramatic day in Sutjeska

Of all the single-day tours in the national park, Maglić is the one with the most sustained exposure and the biggest elevation gain. If you've done Trnovačko Lake or Zelengora and want the next level — this is it. Summit by mid-morning, lake by afternoon, Tjentište by evening.

From Tjentište to the summit and back

This is a long day with significant elevation gain. Weather can change quickly at altitude — the guide monitors conditions and may adjust the route. Timings are indicative.

An early start from Tjentište. The off-road vehicle takes you to the Prijevor plateau, the same starting point as the Trnovačko Lake day hike but this time the trail climbs instead. Through juniper, then scree, then the fixed ropes — summit by mid-morning if conditions allow. Descent via a different route to Trnovačko Lake for lunch. Return to Tjentište by evening.

Dates & availability

June through September only

Maglić is a summer-only ascent. June to September is the only window when the fixed rope sections are clear of ice and the scree zone is consistently safe. Even in summer, weather can change rapidly at 2,386 m — the guide has final say on whether conditions allow the summit attempt on any given day. We always have a fallback plan. Standing at 2,386 m with Bosnia on one side and Montenegro on the other — the panoramic views were beyond words. The three rope sections on the final ridge were genuinely thrilling but completely manageable with the guide's instruction. The descent to Trnovačko Lake was a beautiful contrast: from rock and scree to the most serene lake I've ever seen. A long day but worth every step.

The journey from Prijevor, the challenging ascent through the scree and the safety-assured alpine ropes made it a genuinely thrilling experience. The guide was essential — not just for safety but for pacing and route-reading on the upper ridge. Lunch at Trnovačko Lake at the end was a perfect way to decompress after the summit.

The breathtaking views from the summit were absolutely worth the effort. I had some hiking experience but nothing alpine — the guide was patient and thorough at every rope section. The scree zone in the middle is tougher than it looks from below, so go slowly and trust the guide's foot placement advice. Incredible day.
