Your adventure snapshot

Into the canyon.

The Hrcavka is a tributary of the Sutjeska River, cutting a narrow limestone canyon through the heart of Sutjeska National Park. Inside, the walls close to a few metres apart, the light turns emerald from the water below and the sound of the canyon takes over completely. It is one of those places that cannot be reached any other way — you can only get in by going through it.

The route takes 4–6 hours depending on the group, with sections of wading, scrambling, swimming, waterfall jumping and rope-assisted descent. There are no technical skills required — the guides lead every step, the neoprene gear keeps you warm in the water and the GoPro cameras mounted throughout the route capture everything automatically. You leave with footage of the whole experience, ready to share.

Groups are kept small — a maximum of 12 people — so the pace stays comfortable, the guides stay close and the canyon stays quiet.

Tour highlights

Four things that make this canyon unforgettable

Narrow stone passages

The Hrcavka narrows to barely a few metres across in places — ancient limestone polished by the river, walls rising close on both sides, light filtering down in a single stripe overhead. You move through the canyon at water level, the way the river shaped it. It is slow, attentive movement through a place that most people never see.

Waterfall jumps and slides

Several points along the route have natural slides carved into the rock and drop pools beneath small waterfalls. Jumping and sliding are optional at every point — the guide assesses conditions, demonstrates the line and anyone who wants to watch from the side can do that instead. Nobody is pushed.

Emerald pool swimming

The deepest sections of the Hrcavka open into wide, still pools with water that is clean, cold and intensely green in the right light. The neoprene suit keeps you warm enough to float comfortably. The guides know which pools are best for a longer stop and build those into the pace of the day.

Free GoPro photos and footage

The guides mount GoPro cameras at key points in the canyon — the narrows, the waterfall sections, the pool exits. Everything is captured automatically, edited and shared with the group at the end of the day. No waterproof phone required, nothing to protect. You get the footage; we handle the cameras.

How the day unfolds

Duration depends on group fitness and conditions. Timings are indicative — your guide confirms the plan at the morning briefing.

The group meets at the canyon entrance near Tjentište, gears up in neoprene suits and helmets and enters the Hrcavka at water level. Guides lead the route through narrows, waterfall slides, pool swims and rope-assisted descents. The canyon exit is a short walk back to the starting point. GoPro footage is shared at the end.

  • 08:30
Meet at TjentišteGather at the meeting point for a briefing on the route, safety rules and what to expect inside the canyon. Gear is fitted here.
  • 09:00
Gear up — neoprene suits, helmets, life jacketsGuides help everyone into neoprene wetsuits, helmets and life jackets. GoPro cameras are set up at key positions along the route.
  • 09:30
Enter the canyonFirst step into the Hrcavka. The canyon begins with wide sections and narrows progressively. The walls close in gradually — there's always time to get used to the space before it tightens.
  • 10:30
Narrows and first waterfall sectionThe canyon walls narrow to a few metres. The first natural slides appear — guide demonstrates the line and everyone who wants to goes. Optional at every point.
  • 12:00
Lunch on the rock ledgesA flat section of the canyon with wide ledges makes a natural stopping point. Lunch is eaten at the water's edge with the canyon walls above.
  • 13:00
Emerald pools and rope descentsThe deepest section of the route — wide, still pools and the rope-assisted descent sections. Guides clip you in for the roped sections; the pools are wide enough for the whole group at once.
  • 14:30
Canyon exitThe route emerges from the canyon at the lower exit point. Gear is removed and collected. A short walk returns the group to the starting point.
  • 15:00
GoPro footage handoverPhotos and video from the day are shared with the group. Return to Tjentište independently or by arrangement.
Dates & availability

Available May through September

The Hrcavka Canyon runs from May through September. Water levels are highest in spring, creating the best conditions for the waterfall sections. July and August are the warmest months — good for the pool swims and comfortable in the neoprene even without full sun. Get in touch and we'll confirm availability for your dates.

Completely exceeded expectations. I've done canyoning in several countries but the Hrcavka is in a different category — the colour of the water, the walls of the canyon, the silence in the narrows. The GoPro footage was a brilliant bonus. I watched it the same evening and immediately wanted to go back.

The guides were excellent — patient, knowledgeable and made the whole group feel safe without making it feel soft. The waterfall jumps were the highlight for me, but the rope descent section through the deepest pool was something else entirely. Returned with photos and video of the whole thing. Perfect day.

I was nervous before — not a strong swimmer and hadn't done anything like this before. The guide was calm and reassuring from the start and checked in with me at every section before we moved. The life jacket meant I was safe in every pool even when I was out of my depth. The emerald colour of the water is something I still think about.
