Tara River Rafting
25 km of rapids through Europe's deepest canyon — all gear, a river guide and a riverside lunch included.
Velenići village sits high above the Tara River Canyon — the deepest river canyon in Europe. The stud farm here has been breeding purebred Arabian horses for generations, and the trails from the farm wind along the canyon rim through beech and oak forests with the river a long way below.
The day starts with a welcome drink on the terrace, a proper introduction to your horse and basic instruction for anyone riding for the first time. Then you're out on the trail — an hour or more along the canyon edge with the views you'd expect from 1,200 metres above a gorge. After the horses, the Via Ferrata takes you onto the cliff face itself, across a fixed stone bridge and up to where Bosnia's highest zip line sends you back across the canyon.
Everything is instructed and led by the guides. No prior experience required for any of the three activities — the guides teach everything on the spot and set the pace for the whole group.
Purebred Arabians bred at the Velenići stud farm — riding along trails on the edge of the Tara River Canyon, with the river 1,200 m below and Montenegro across the ridge. Beginners are taught before mounting; the horses are calm on the trail and responsive to the guides.
Fixed iron rungs up the cliff face, then a stone bridge crossing a section of open canyon. All equipment and instruction provided. The Via Ferrata is designed to be accessible for first-timers — your guide clips you in, explains the technique and leads the route.
The cable runs across the canyon and crosses two rivers. At the top end, standing on the platform with the valley below, most people pause for a moment before going. On the other side, it's one of those views that's impossible to describe properly. This is the one people talk about afterwards.
The day ends at the Velenići restaurant terrace — dinner with the canyon view that you spent the day above. It's a good place to sit with what just happened before the off-road vehicle takes you back to Tjentište.
Exact timing shifts with the season and group. Your guide covers the plan at the morning briefing. Timings below are indicative.
After a homemade breakfast at the villa, an off-road vehicle takes you through the forest to the Velenići stud farm on the canyon rim. The horse riding runs first — instruction for beginners, then out on the trail along the edge of the canyon. Via Ferrata and zipline follow. The day ends with dinner on the terrace before the return drive to Tjentište.
An amazing adventure. The horses were calm and well-trained and the route took us along terrain I never expected — right on the edge of the canyon with Montenegro across the ridge. Then the Via Ferrata, the stone bridge and the zip line — all in one day. The guide made everything feel completely safe.
Absolutely loved it. I'd never ridden a horse before and had no idea what to expect — but the guides were experienced and made sure everyone felt comfortable before we went out. The zip line was the highlight: standing on the platform with the canyon below is something you don't forget.
The horse riding tour exceeded my expectations. Beautiful trails, well-trained horses and a guide who knew every corner of the canyon and shared the history and geology of the whole area. The combination with Via Ferrata and zipline makes it a genuinely full day — not just a pony ride with a view.
