Perućica Primeval Forest
A guided walk through one of Europe's last old-growth forests, ending at the 75 m Skakavac waterfall.
Nestled within Sutjeska National Park, the Zelengora range is one of Bosnia's most dramatic highland plateaus — a place where ancient meadows give way to pristine mountain lakes and wide-open views that feel like the edge of the world.
This one-day adventure takes you through fragrant alpine terrain by 4×4 terrain vehicle and on foot, visiting two breathtaking glacial lakes: Gornje Bare at 1,515 m and the quieter Donje Bare below. A 20-minute walk from the lower lake brings you to the Borić Viewpoint — a sweeping panorama across the entire Zelengora plateau that you won't soon forget.
The morning is all movement and mountain air. The afternoon brings a traditional Bosnian lunch back at the villa, followed by a visit to the Sutjeska Battle WWII memorial — one of the most striking monuments in former Yugoslavia.
Reach the higher of the two lakes by terrain vehicle, then take in the mirror-still water set against open highland skies.
Walk through Zelengora's famed green fields, packed with wild herbs used in traditional Bosnian medicine for centuries.
A 20-minute walk leads to a sweeping view over the entire Zelengora plateau — the high point of the day, literally and figuratively.
Return to Green Villas for a full home-cooked Bosnian lunch, included in the tour — the perfect reward after a morning in the mountains.
Your guide will brief you on the day's plan at the villa before setting off into the highlands. Here's how the day unfolds.
Start at Green Villas in Tjentište for a morning briefing, then climb by terrain vehicle to the stunning highland plateau. The day moves between lakes, meadows and viewpoints before returning for a well-earned Bosnian lunch and a memorable stop at a WWII memorial.
An incredible day — the lakes were stunning, the guide was knowledgeable and the lunch at the villa was the best food we had in Bosnia. The terrain vehicle ride up to Gornje Bare alone was worth it.
We were a group of six and everything was perfectly organised. The Borić Viewpoint was breathtaking — we could see all the way into Montenegro. Highly recommend going in the morning when the light is perfect.
Beautiful scenery and wonderful hosts. Zelengora in spring is something else — the wildflowers were out and the meadows were vivid green. If you can, go in May or early June for the flowers.
We'd heard Sutjeska was special but nothing quite prepared us for Zelengora. The guide knew every plant, bird and story about the area. The WWII memorial at the end was a real highlight too — impressive architecture.
